What Leading Voices Are Saying About Readers Are Leaders – 2

The Book “Readers are Leaders” is a compendium of information on the culture of reading. In the book, Dr. Elvis Ukpaka challenges leaders to read as a means of acquiring knowledge to be able to address the issues that face them and those they lead. I find the story of Kamkwamba – the 14-year old boy from Malawi particularly interesting. This boy’s parents were too poor to pay his fees (like mine were) and he consequently dropped out of school. However, Kamkwamba was undaunted by his inability to complete his formal education. He looked at adversity the way a lion looks at a T- bone steak and continued his education informally by using the public library. The young man eventually became world famous by generating electricity from a windmill. The windmill which supplied water to his little village was built by technology he acquired from the public library. I recommend this book to every true leader, especially in the developing countries of the World and to Nigerian leaders in particular.

Dr. Elvis Ukpaka (my Brother from another mother as I fondly call him) has done a great job with this book “Readers are Leaders”. For us to win inward and as a nation, we really need to encourage everyone to read in order to become leaders who provide solutions that will move our country forward. Well done Dr. Elvis Ukpaka. Nigeria is a shining light as we take up the courage to read to become leaders.

Readers are Leaders is unequivocally an inclusive package: It identifies a problem. It dissects the problem. It proffers solution to the problem. To be sure, with this book, Elvis Ukpaka is able to address one of the greatest challenges of our time which has metamorphosed into a plague: poor reading culture.
